Profesional league in October 2008 with name Indonesia Super league ( ISL )
Indonesia made history when playing as the Dutch East Indies, they became the first Asian nation to take part in the World Cup finals in 1938. In the 59 years since qualifying for the France finals, however, the Indonesians have not come close to repeating that landmark feat.

The All Indonesian Football Federation was founded on April 19, 1930 by seven districts associations. Today, there are 17 semi professional clubs and more than 350 amateur associations spread throughout the 13,660 islands that make up Indonesia.

Although the country's playing population numbers more than five million, the country's footballing development has been hampered by its unique geography.

In 2004, Vision Asia, a strategic development plan envisioned by AFC President Mohamed bin Hammam, has been introduced to Indonesia to assist them in elevating football standards in the country.
